In this course

You will learn the basics of piano, starting from,  the very beggining, 

until being able to play songs and enjoy music READING music scores.  The total duration of the course is 3 months, one session per week. Scroll down to see the 12 sessions and the content of the same.

CURRICULUM

Session 1: Introduction to the Piano

  • Objectives:

    • Understand the layout of the keyboard (white and black keys).

    • Learn about the middle C and finger numbers.

  • Activities:

    • Explore the piano by finding middle C and playing it with different fingers.

    • Creative Exercise: Free play. Finding our own melodies around the Signature of C Major.

Session 2: Basic Hand Position & Simple Melodies

  • Objectives:

    • Learn proper hand positioning on the keyboard.

    • Play simple melodies using finger numbers.

  • Activities:​

    • Creative Exercise: Combination and coordination with both of the hands of diferent musical figures.

Session 3: Reading Basic Music Notation

  • Objectives:

    • Introduction to the staff, treble, and bass clefs.

    • Learn how to read and play notes C, D, E, F, and G in the right hand.

  • Activities:

    • Play a simple song using these notes.

    • Creative Exercise: Create a short melody using only 5 notes. Create an improvisation playing black keys.

Session 4: Rhythm & Timing

  • Objectives:

    • Understand basic rhythms (quarter notes, half notes, whole notes).

    • Practice playing with a steady beat.

  • Activities:

    • Clap and play simple rhythmic patterns with songs. Can you follow up the rhythm?

    • Creative Exercise: Compose, and write down a 4-bar rhythm pattern and play it on the piano.

Session 5: Left Hand Basics

  • Objectives:

    • Learn how to use the left hand to play simple bass notes (C, G).

    • Practice coordinating both hands.

  • Activities:

    • Play a simple melody in the right hand with basic bass notes in the left. Start reading melodies from the book ¨10 finger Tunes¨

    • Creative Exercise: Improvise a simple accompaniment to the melody using the left hand.

Session 6: Introduction to Chords

  • Objectives:

    • Learn to play basic major and minor chords (C, G, Am, F).

    • Understand chord progressions.

  • Activities:

    • Practice playing and switching between these chords.

    • Creative Exercise: Create a chord progression and experiment with different rhythms.

Session 7: Dynamics & Expression

  • Objectives:

    • Explore dynamics (playing softly vs. loudly).

    • Learn to express emotions through music.

  • Activities:

    • Play a simple piece, first softly (piano) and then loudly (forte).

    • Creative Exercise: Play a short piece that tells a story using dynamics.

Session 8: Scales & Finger Exercises

  • Objectives:

    • Learn the C major scale (one octave).

    • Understand the importance of finger strength and dexterity.

  • Activities:

    • Practice playing the C major scale slowly, then with increased speed.

    • Creative Exercise: Improvise a short piece using only the notes of the C major scale.

Session 9: Introduction to Improvisation

  • Objectives:

    • Understand the basics of improvisation.

    • Use learned chords and scales to create spontaneous music.

  • Activities:

    • Improvise over a simple chord progression (e.g., C-G-Am-F).

    • Creative Exercise: Record the improvisation and listen back to discuss what worked well.

Session 10: Playing Simple Songs

  • Objectives:

    • Learn to play a simple, recognizable song (e.g., "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star").

    • Practice playing with both hands together.

  • Activities:

    • Work on playing the song smoothly and with expression.

    • Creative Exercise: Add personal touches to the song, such as a different ending or introduction.

Session 11: Composition Basics

  • Objectives:

    • Learn the basics of creating a simple composition.

    • Understand how to structure a piece of music.

  • Activities:

    • Begin writing a short original piece using a combination of learned chords and melodies.

    • Creative Exercise: Write a short piece with a specific theme (e.g., a rainy day, a celebration).

 

 

Session 12: Review & Performance

  • Objectives:

    • Review all the concepts learned during the course.

    • Prepare for a short performance.

  • Activities:

    • Revisit favorite exercises and pieces from the course.

    • Creative Exercise: Perform the original composition or favorite piece from the course for friends, family, or a small group.

This course blends foundational piano techniques with creative expression, encouraging students to explore their own musical voices while learning the essentials of piano playing. Each session is designed to be engaging and fun, fostering a love for music and creativity.
