Between 2020 and 2024, I had the privilege of collaborating on various Spanish music and flamenco projects, bringing the soul of Andalusian traditions to the Indian stage. My role as a pianist involved interpreting Spanish music while Bettina Castaño (Flamenco Dancer) would interpretate her dance movements — often blending traditional forms with more contemporary or classical piano textures.

These collaborations included enriching encounters with other disciplines, such as performances alongside Kathak dancer Aditi Brawhal, where two cultural rhythms met in powerful and poetic ways. These cross-cultural dialogues allowed for unique fusions and deeply moving performances, celebrating both roots and reinvention.

A Doll's House

A DOLL’S HOUSE

Theatre (2022)

‘I must make up my mind which is right – society or I.’ - Nora Helmer

A Doll's House is a three-act play written by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen. It premiered at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 21 December 1879, having been published earlier that month. The play is set in a Norwegian town circa 1879. The play concerns the fate of a married woman, who at the time in Norway lacked reasonable opportunities for self-fulfillment in a male-dominated world, despite the fact that Ibsen denied it was his intent to write a feminist play. It was a great sensation at the time, and caused a "storm of outraged controversy" that went beyond the theatre to the world of newspapers and society. In 2006, the centennial of Ibsen's death, A Doll's House held the distinction of being the world's most performed play that year. UNESCO has inscribed Ibsen's autographed manuscripts of A Doll's House on the Memory of the World Register in 2001, in recognition of their historical value.

A Doll's House questions the traditional roles of men and women in 19th-century marriage. To many 19th-century Europeans, this was scandalous. The covenant of marriage was considered holy, and to portray it as Ibsen did was controversial. However, the Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw found Ibsen's willingness to examine society without prejudice exhilarating.

A short film on the making of this play is available below, which captures the ideas, the process, and the labour that went into its making. This beautiful film comprises interviews and rehearsals' footage in an attempt to express the journey that brought this show to stage.

Homenage to Jacques Brel in the International day of languages.

Performing at Alliance Française Delhi alongside the talented singer Iris Munos was a moment that resonates deeply within me. Together, we embarked on a musical journey through the timeless repertoire of Jacques Brel, the legendary Belgian singer-songwriter whose emotive compositions have left an indelible mark on the world of music.

From the moment the curtains parted and the first notes filled the air, there was an electric energy pulsating through the venue. The audience, a tapestry of eager faces, seemed to hang onto every lyric, every melody that Iris and I wove together. It was a testament to the universality of Brel's music, transcending borders and languages to touch the hearts of all who listened.

With each song meticulously arranged, we sought to capture the essence of Brel's artistry while infusing it with our own interpretations. From the poignant melancholy of "Ne Me Quitte Pas" to the fervent passion of "Amsterdam," every performance was imbued with a sense of reverence for the source material, coupled with a desire to breathe new life into these cherished classics.

Collaborating with Iris was an enriching experience, her velvety voice intertwining seamlessly with the intricate melodies I crafted. Together, we navigated the highs and lows of Brel's repertoire, channeling the raw emotions and vivid imagery that define his songs.

And as the final notes of our last performance lingered in the air, there was a palpable sense of connection—a shared experience that transcended language barriers and cultural divides. In that moment, it was as if we had become conduits for the legacy of Jacques Brel, uniting disparate souls in a celebration of music and storytelling.

La Cotorra del Mercat

Being the pianist for a theatre production is an experience unlike any other—a thrilling journey that combines the magic of live performance with the rich tapestry of storytelling. My time as the pianist for the theatre play "La Cotorra del Mercat" was nothing short of extraordinary, filled with moments of joy, creativity, and sheer exhilaration.

From the moment I sat down at the piano, surrounded by the dim glow of stage lights and the buzz of anticipation from the audience, I knew I was embarking on an unforgettable adventure. Being part of the "Postart Ensemble" has been an extraordinary journey filled with beauty, innovation, and cultural richness. This ensemble's unique blend of Balkan music and contemporary improvisation, infused with the compositions of Jelena Soro, has created a musical experience unlike any other.

From the moment I became involved with the ensemble, I was drawn to the inherent beauty and complexity of the music we created together. Jelena Soro's compositions served as the cornerstone of our repertoire, offering a compelling fusion of traditional Balkan melodies with modern harmonic and rhythmic elements. Each composition became a canvas upon which we could explore and express our individual voices while honoring the rich musical heritage of the Balkans.

What made being part of the "Postart Ensemble" so special was the spirit of collaboration and exploration that infused every rehearsal and performance. Coplas y Cuplés with Joyce Cheung

Collaborating on singing coplas and cuplés of Spain was a journey steeped in tradition, culture, and political significance. These musical genres, deeply rooted in Spanish history, serve as both a form of entertainment and a means of political and social commentary, making them an integral part of the country's musical heritage.

Coplas and cuplés have long been used as vehicles for expressing political revindications, often serving as a platform for marginalized voices to be heard. Through witty lyrics, clever wordplay, and poignant melodies, these songs shed light on pressing social issues, challenge societal norms, and advocate for change.

One of the reasons why cuplés hold such importance in the music history of Spain is their ability to blend entertainment with social critique. Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, cuplés were often performed in cabarets, theaters, and music halls, providing audiences with a form of escapism while also addressing pressing political and social issues of the time.

The theatrical element of cuplés is equally significant, as these songs were often accompanied by elaborate stage performances, costumes, and choreography. This theatricality added an extra layer of depth and impact to the music, captivating audiences and enhancing the overall message being conveyed.

Moreover, coplas and cuplés have served as a means of preserving cultural identity and heritage. By drawing on traditional Spanish rhythms, melodies, and themes, these songs provide a window into the rich tapestry of Spanish culture, allowing listeners to connect with their roots and celebrate their heritage.

Collaborating on singing coplas and cuplés provided an opportunity to engage with this rich musical tradition while also shining a light on contemporary political issues. Through our performances, we were able to pay homage to the artists who came before us, while also using our voices to advocate for a more just and equitable society.

In essence, singing coplas and cuplés is not just about entertaining audiences—it's about using music as a tool for social change, fostering dialogue, and inspiring action. By harnessing the power of music and theater, we can continue to honor the legacy of these iconic genres while also shaping a brighter future for generations to come.

Taller De Micro-relatos

Being the pianist for Microrrelatos was an enchanting experience that transported me into the whimsical world of children's imagination. In these unique events, kids were the storytellers, weaving tales live with their boundless creativity while I provided the musical backdrop on the piano.

Each Microrrelatos event was a magical journey into the fantastical realms conjured by the young storytellers. As they took the stage, their eyes sparkling with excitement, I felt a surge of anticipation ripple through the audience. And as they began to spin their tales—filled with dragons, fairies, and enchanted forests—I found myself swept away by the sheer power of their imagination.

As the pianist, my role was to enhance the storytelling experience, adding depth, emotion, and drama to each narrative with my music. From delicate melodies that whispered of hidden secrets to thunderous chords that heralded the arrival of mythical creatures, every note I played was carefully crafted to complement and elevate the stories being told.

But perhaps the most beautiful aspect of being the pianist for Microrrelatos was the sense of collaboration and connection that blossomed between myself and the young storytellers. As they wove their tales, I listened intently, allowing their words to inspire the melodies that flowed from my fingertips. And in turn, my music seemed to fuel their imaginations, spurring them on to even greater heights of creativity.

As the final story drew to a close and the last notes of music faded into the air, there was a palpable sense of wonder and delight in the room. The audience, young and old alike, had been transported to a world of magic and possibility, all thanks to the power of storytelling and music.

Reflecting on my time as the pianist for Microrrelatos, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a special and beautiful experience.
